I currently sit on the CCSC executive board as Secretary. For the past two years, I served on the CCSC, as vice president of the class of 2004. In addition, I am the president of the Hindu Students Organization, and the president of my fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. I have been very active in the Columbia Economics Society, and now serve as the Alumni Mixer coordinator.
Biography:
I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and decided that New York City would be an exciting place to go to college. Despite the excitement of the city, I still enjoy going back home and relaxing in the suburbs of Baltimore.
There is little doubt that I have had an incredible time at Columbia. It all started three years ago as a first year when I decided to run for student council. Running on tl Assorted Flavors ticket with Khalid Ali, I became the vice president of my class. I'm still very fond of the memories on class council together with Vernon Beckford, Christina Baranetsky, Eric Andrew, and Maria Marulanda, (and Medha Goyal and Lindsay Shortliffe) especially getting John Jay Dining hall ready for “Put the Devil Back in Hell” and having that pre-event nervousness. We would all stare at the door, hoping lots of people show up so our hours of work would somehow be justified. That year of council led to another exciting year on council as a sophomore where I began to take my own initiative with the Academic Judicial System Proposal and the Graduate School Forums (With a year of council experience under my belt, I began wondering why all class programming seemed to be parties. Thus, I began to organize, with the help of my council, a series of graduate school forums in which the deans of admissions of the various Columbia graduate schools could come and speak with the sophomore class). These forums were highly successful and were continued this year by the sophomore class and expanded to Graduate Panels by the University Senate thanks to Tamar Simon and Hilary Rosenstein.
The end of my sophomore year presented me with an interesting dilemma. Michael J. Novielli, the current student body president, had been impressed with my work and wanted me to run for executive board. He believed in my potential as a leader and thought my policy initiative meant I belonged on the school-wide level (Executive board). Though it was difficult for me to leave the class council that I loved so much, I decided to run with Novi as secretary of the College. A year working closely with Novi has taught me a great deal about what it takes to be president of the school. I have seen him through good and bad times and with all of this in mind, I decided to run for the position of CCSC president because I believed I could fulfill the role. I would never want to say that I can fill Novi’s shoes but I can sure as hell try and I believe that my experience and love for Columbia will guide me so that I too can be a great president.
