I hold the position of Representative/Treasurer on the CC '06 Class Council. As a Columbia Cheerleader, I have been highly active in the athletic community. I am also involved at Hillel, serving as the Social Chair of Kesher. Since the beginning of the year, I have tutored 4th graders at P.S. 165.
Biography:
A year ago I took a risk. I accepted an offer, a challenge, in response to a desire for something new. Eight months ago I boarded a plane that would take me three thousand miles away from one home, so that I may find another. Today I call myself a Columbian with an enormous amount of pride. I feel a particular bond with the Class of 2006 and a connection to the larger community, because I chose to get involved. I was elected to the first-year class council, became active in Hillel, and involved myself in athletics as a cheerleader. Whoever told me Columbia doesn’t have community was glaringly wrong. The community is there and thriving, in various pockets; one only has to choose to be a part of it. I believe this is where Columbia can improve. I refuse to accept the current state of our community with resignation; I will actively pursue change.
Though I am happy at Columbia, I do experience my fair share of our collective frustrations. It is this dichotomy that compels me to take action. I am running for Secretary of the CCSC Executive Board because I know that we, as a student body, can effect change. I have seen CCSC do it this year. As a first-year council we were particularly upset with the absence of dining services over fall break, and in response, dining services agreed to open some facilities over the Thanksgiving and Spring breaks. Though such an issue may seem small in the larger scheme of campus life, it is the small issues that affect and irritate us every day as students. When these seemingly small issues are overlooked by administrators, it is the job of the student council to step in. PULSE will step in.
As secretary I will devote myself to opening up lines of communication between the students and the administration, and will raise my voice so we all are heard. It is not my nature to remain silent when I believe something should be said. I am loud in voice and strong in my convictions. I choose to be active; I choose to be loud. I am a part of PULSE, a passionate and committed team; I hope you will choose us to be your voice.
